F Cat!old an origami flying bat!

This is one of my favourite models. If you've done any folding at all, you shouldn't find it difficult. Kids and cats both love to chase these :-)!

Please be patient as these images load.

Remember: when you're ready to fly your bat, do not throw it. Just hold it flat, either in your palm or by the tail, then let it go and watch it drift along. Start with 6-inch square paper. The higher up you'll be to fly it (standing on a chair, for example, or at the top of the stairs -- or at the top of a mountain!), the larger the paper you can use to fold the model.

Model: Flying bat
Created by: Stephen Weiss, USA
Diagrams and folding instructions:
M. Martell, USA

1. Diagonal fold point to point (coloured side up).
Bat fold 3
2. Make an ice cream cone (white cone, coloured ice cream). Then turn paper over.
Bat fold 4
3. Make a valley fold between the points A and B. Open all folds. Turn to coloured side.
Bat fold 5
4. Fold point A to point B. Unfold. Repeat, folding point C to point D.
Bat fold 6
5. At this point you should have the same folds as shown.
Bat fold 7
6. Simultaneously refold the two adjacent edges in and squash the triangle sticking up. Finished result shown left.
Bat fold 8
7. Fold loose flap up to point A. The square is now coloured.
Bat fold 9
8. Fold the two side flaps in one-half, up towards outside folded edge.*
Bat fold 10
9. Unfold step 8. Lift up one half of coloured square; at the same time, refold step 8 (will fold only to point A). Then lay the flap back down (see detail).
Bat fold 11
10. Holding the model at point A, pull point B up towards the "nose" to swivel the paper out as far as it will go. Fold along this new angle. (Note Diagram 10 is not proportional.)
Bat fold 12
11. Bring points A and B to the center fold. Unfold. Lift up each triangle and squash fold to form ears. Lift up top flap of each "ear."
Bat fold 13
12. To finish, fold point A to back of head. Shape ears. Fold back tips of wings.
